Dear Readers,
In this issue we look at a new invention that originates from Stellenbosch that will hopefully have a huge impact on bringing potable water to the 1.2 billion people that do not currently have access to it. We then look at the potential conflicts that may arise over water, and with 450 million people already being affected by water shortages worldwide this does not seem too unlikely.
Good news is provided by Durban’s eThekwini Water and Sanitation (EWS) which has introduced measures to curb water loss and reduce non billable water consumption. We then look at a narrowly diverted environmental disaster that occurred when workers went on strike at the Grootvlei mine because they had not been paid for several months. Negotiations were made just in time to prevent the flooding of toxic water which would have been caused by the water not being continually pumped out.
This is an exciting month for the Sustainable Water Resource as we are currently holding the inaugural Sustainable Water Resource Conference and Exhibition at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria. Read more about this exciting event here and check back after the conference for photos and presentations from the leading industry speakers and thought leaders that are speaking at the conference.
Regards,
Cara
