Dear Readers,
This month we look at a range of issues and new technologies. In the first article WWF CEO, Dr Morné Du Plessis, warns that South Africa faces a water threat and the water issues in the country should be taken more seriously. An Israel technology is said to be able to reduce operating and maintenance costs at Wastewater treatment plants by as much as 70% - a possible step in the right direction towards reusing this precious resource?
Government appears to be onboard with a projected expenditure on water and waste water infrastructure projects amount to R14,2bn. This includes the upgrading of dams and water pipes to ensure correct distribution and efficiency.
The City of Johannesburg is battling a rising water table and this is affecting the roads in the city as well as residents who are witnessing “bubbling through the road and/or their gardens”. Dr Bernard Talbot has written an interesting article showing how beer can be brewed without water- definitely one way to conserve water!
